1&1 VPS?

Hello,

I have been looking at 1&1's virtual private server plans and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them? Is a vps similar to having your own dedicated server? Do they usually have the same email limits as on a shared plan?

I have emailed them with my questions and thought I would ask here while I await their reply.

Hi Keith,

A VPS is generally very similar to having your own dedicated server.  Basically the provider installs multiple copies of the operating system, splitting up one server into many and giving you the same full control you would have with a full dedicated server.  The downside is you are sharing the server resources, IP, etc. with other users, so their actions can also affect you.  Depending on how the VPS is set up other users may be able to hog CPU and disk access time which can make your site run slowly.  If you are lucky you will share with users who do not need the full power of the VPS.

I would not recommend 1&1 because of their poor customer support - they are a "hands-off" kind of host (no server upgrades, etc) and their support seems to be outsourced (poor telephone support).  It will probably be 24+ hours before you get an email response.  There are many other providers with better service you may want to consider... Layered Tech, Burst.net, The Planet, to name a few.

Thanks Dean for explaining that. I thought that was the way it worked. I guess the best thing to do would be to hold out and purchase a dedicated server as soon as I can afford it. I was just looking at 1and1's vps that started at $29.95 and thought that was a good deal, but it kind of defeats my purpose if I still have to share the server resources still. I have also been looking at the dedicated servers at various hosts and, man, it's all confusing to this newbie!

Hi Keith,

I can almost certainly help you find a home and also assist with server setup, etc.  How many emails per day do you need to send?  For an unclean list on a new server I cannot recommend more than 150,000 per day, and you should send much less if possible.  There are numerous pitfalls when sending this much email.  Recently Yahoo has been a huge problem, with their rate-limiting causing bottlenecks that can completely crash a server if mailings are not closely monitored.  Other server-related issues can be considered, too.

I can perform full server setups for $250 and do ongoing monitoring, security updates, delivery investigation, etc. for $35/mo.  I am also willing to do one-time optimization and installation for the standard $50 fee, however this does not include full server setup which can include off-site backups, DNS configuration, help with AOL complaint processing, and more.  More details can be found here.

No spam allowed of course, very strict on that... It also comes with a bit newer autoresponder than Listmail but you should also be able(?) to use listmail if you wanted...
