General Help & How-To / Avoiding Email Blockers
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:44:47 am »
Dean

Sometimes I find that some messages are not getting through. What can be done to get past Email Blockers ?
I would know the full extent of this I could get "bounce" to work, but that is another story.

PS. I got an email form a company promising to send millions of emails. In your experience, what would you say about http://www.emailadvertisinginc.com/

General Help & How-To / Bounce Not Bouncing
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:21:21 am »
I never really got "Bounce" to work when I first started with Listmail. Probably because it did not matter much in thoes days.

Now I want to send some emails to about 100 people and I have to enter the addresses by hand..... That will be a fun day.

Anyway, boredom will take have an effect and some emails will be entered incorrectly. So now I need bounce to work.

What is the simples method to discover if I have entered a bad email address.

Also, what are the most common faults when making a mess of seting up bounce.cgi

Thanks

General Help & How-To / Referrals
« on: September 21, 2006, 07:14:38 am »

Continuing the question of how to take advantage of referrals... suggested email addresses.

In the absence of a good solution... how about this.

Create a webpage with a form for referrals.

Form gets delivered to my inbox.

Now I can manually email people and give them a link to the website signup page.

But, I might end up spamming someone.

Then that causes problems.

Any good ideas about how to send low volumes of possible spam... that is if someone is abusing the referral system.

Development, Suggestions / Referal Autoresponder
« on: September 12, 2006, 03:00:14 am »

It would be nice to build my list by getting existing subscribers to add the names and email addresses of people who they think would appreciate the newsletters they are sent.

So person A could refer person B.
B would then get an email from me, mentioning that "Dear B, your friend A suggested you read this...... please click to confirm....etc."

But.
This could be abused and the resulting emails could be treated as spam.

There must be someway of doing this without a malicious person causing me to accidentally spam anyone.

General Help & How-To / Referal List Building
« on: August 14, 2006, 06:18:57 am »
Dean

Referals are a cheap way to get new subscribers, when it can be done.

I send my list useful emails / useful info.
I want to send out an email to my existing list saying something like

"Dear ******, I hope you have found the information I have sent you useful. Who do you know who would appreciate also getting this info? Who do you personally know who would be very grateful to you if he or she was to receive the same information you get."

"Please fill in: your name / email. Their name /email."

And the new potential subscriber would instantly get a personalised email endorsed by their friend who had provided the fereral.

I can see how to do this with single referals.

How could it be done for referals of 2 to 10 names and emails.

Thanks for looking into this

General Help & How-To / Cron setup
« on: August 07, 2006, 06:18:26 am »

Here is the interesting difference between what you have suggested:

/usr/bin/wget -O /dev/null -T 0 http://example.com/mail/dailymail.php?pw=****** 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null

And what the server company suggests:
php /home/CpanelUsername/public_html/mail/dailymail.php?pw=******

However neither seem to work.
Note that the actual days and times are set on the control pannel.

Thanks for looking at this.

When trying to speed up emails on a shared Cpanel server, where do you put in the code when there does not appear to be a "/etc/exim.conf" file in the "etc" folder.

General Help & How-To / Easy Emails
« on: July 21, 2006, 01:02:00 am »
Dean

To write great business generating emails requires a clear head and a smothe flow of creativity.

If you write an email in MS Outlook, its easy.
The spell checker catches the stupid mistake.
You can add hyperlinks.
Bullet points and other improvements are easy.
Etc.
And, am I correct in thinking the whole thing converts to text automatically when required.

Alternatively.
You can do it in html.
Lots of code to check.
Plenty of ways to make mistakes.
Worst of all, instead of concentrating on great copy, much of the mental focus is now on html code.
And finally, am I correct in thinking you have to do two versions html & text.
Yuck

There must be an easy way.
List mail users have produced great looking material.

Please..... how is this done ?

Writing an MS Outlook type email and then automatically converting it would be an ideal solution at this time.

Thanks Again
With your help steady progress is being made and bit by bit everything is turning out really well.

Getting your helpful tips to work one by one.

Next questions.

First Confirm Email can be slow getting out. I know this may not be down to Listmail, but is there anything that can be done to speed it up.
Do Express Class emails exist... Just joking.

Thanks again

General Help & How-To / Writing Emails
« on: July 19, 2006, 08:06:34 am »
Dean

Progress is measured by the ever advancing nature of my emails.
Thanks to your help your product should soon be fully in action.

QUESTIONs

1. Use Listmail as a site login.
New user would give name and email address for entry to site and get standard confirmation email and sign up messages (all this i have got to work).
Existing users could give previously submitted details and gain entry into rest of site............. I dont know how to do this bit. Also, avoiding repeat of cofirmation email and sign up procedure would be helpful.

2. Improving the technical content of emails.
I have yet to find how to put in the "unsubscribe".
Also, do I add "unsubscribe" to the confirmation email and any reminders.

3. Improving the technical content of emails.
How do I add hyperlinks. Example "www.mysite.com" or "email@mysite.com"

4. Improving the look of emails.
Font sizes?
Anything else helpful that does not get emails blocked in the process.

5. Text emails
Having produced a good quality html email, any tips on how to keep it looking good as text?

Thanks for all you expert advice.

Development, Suggestions / Easier Instructions
« on: July 18, 2006, 09:47:38 am »
Dean

Next time you are doing a review of instructions, there are a few easy ways to make it simpler = save you time answering questions.

I personally notice that in retrospect you do give most of the directions needed. However, when someone is unfamiliar with these systems, vital information gets missed.

Perhaps schematic drawings of what links to what might help in some instances.

Clearly defined action points.
Here is an example of one I had to ask you about because I missed the key action point. The instructions said.

"Enter install as the password as instructed"

Could be written as:

Type the following into the password box:
" install "

Or

Enter "install" as the password in the password box.

Esentially two points are always vital for clear instructions
1. What to look for
2. What to do

Good luck reviewing the pages of instructions.

General Help & How-To / Scipt Options for basic setup
« on: July 18, 2006, 09:28:14 am »
Dean

Thanks for last tips, back in action again.

Now a "cron" setup question.

My server has a good control panel. It has its own well laid out "cron" section.

So well laid out that your suggested script may not work.
This control panel has an option where you set up all the times on drop down tables and insert a smaller amount of script.

I asked the server teck support guy what he would suggest and got the following answer:......

You dont need wget - use this...

php /home/username/public_html/mail/dailymail.php?pw=YourDailyMailPass 1> /dev/null

where username is the name of your cpanel username. Enter the job you want to run then set the timing afterwards.

COMMENT
It is ambigious as to which user name to use. eg my host logon name, website name, with or without http or www. , etc

QUESTION
Is this a case where more than one script will work?
What do you suggest?

Thanks
David
