General Help & How-To / Sending email hangs with "Internal Serve Error"
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:12:38 pm »
After sending about three batches of 50 emails I get an error pop up that says in bold: Internal Server Error

When I try to resume it happens again. I don't know what has been sent or what is unsent. I don't have a clue what to do.

Steve,
Yes, I'm sticking with Apollo's shared server.  Now that it works I have no reason to pay more for a VPS - especially if some things don't work. Their support has usually been good but sometimes I get a dud on the line.

Great support for ListMail.

It is wonderful to get timely support by the expert who developed the software instead of just getting queued up by an uninformed technical support staff.

Dean,
I did hit RESTART after getting your last message and it seems to have worked correctly. YEA!

The my reference to some people getting it twice was not because of an automated duplication but because I have tried to send it to the full list twice and both times some people got it before it failed. So, as a result of that, some got my email twice.

Changing the "Reconnect every x emails" to 99 seems to have done the trick.

Thanks for your help.

Dean,
I've  had trouble getting the forum to work today so I sent you an email.
Now it seems to be up so here it is...

I tried to send the newsletter this morning at 9:50 Central time. After 50 were sent I got an error.

Sending error. Check your mail settings.

I attached a screen shot of it.

Now some have gotten the newsletter twice. Most have not gotten it at all. Not good.

Please look at my mail setting to see what is wrong.

Dean,
I am planning to send the newsletter again tomorrow, Thursday. morning.

Are there any additional safety measures or diagnostic changes that I (or you) could make before I sent it?

Thank you again for all of your help.

Dean,
Here is the answer to your question:
Are there any hourly or daily limits on email or a maximum # of messages per connection?

Hello,

There are no limitations set on the servers end. However, if you are caught spamming your account will be disabled. So long as that is not the case, there would be no problems on our end.
Many times there is a limitation set in the email client program. For more information you'll want to check with the maker of the software if you find it is a problem. That is the only other possible problem I could think of.

Thank you,

I didn't see anything about remaining emails in queue. I didn't refresh (as per the warning) I just let it run until it said it was finished. I also didn't hit Back at all.

Is it possible ListMail has the remainder of the messages still in a queue somewhere?

I'll ask the host about the limitations you mentioned. I was considering moving from a shared server to their virtual private server just to get over th SMTP limitations (at twice the cost) but if you don't think that is the problem, I sure don't want to go through the effort to change or pay extra.

General Help & How-To / Chat with my host's tech support.
« on: May 02, 2006, 11:07:44 am »
Here is the text of a LIVE CHAT with Apollo tech support:

** You are now speaking with Caleb, Technical Support. **
Caleb : Welcome to Technical Support Live Chat ! How can I help you?
Randall :
On Friday, 4/ 29/06 at approximately 12:30 pm Eastern time I sent out my e-newsletter. But there was a problem. The program I use sends them out in batchs of 50 so it doesn't overload the system. But after 800 went out it, stalled and then suddenly said it was done. It should have sent emails to 2,500 people but most didn't get it.

I'm trying to figure out what went wrong. I contacted technical support of the ListMail program and he wonders if there are some limits within Apollo
that could be getting hit. By the way, I sent a similar e-newsletter to 2,000 people in January with no problem.

Can you look at my account and see what happened?

Thanks,
Randall Munson

PS. This is a double opt-in newsletter, not spam. In fact I have less than 1% that later cancel it.
Caleb : We do not diagnose 3rd party scripts
Caleb : and the only thing that would cause it to terminate most likely is to many connections or sessions
Randall : I'm not asking you to debug a 3rd party script. What I'm wondering is if there are any limitations you set that could have caused the problem.
Caleb : only limitations would be number of SMTP connections
Randall : and what is that limit?
Caleb : I dont know the admins have hard set it
Caleb : it is not really supposed to be disclosed
Caleb : as we dont want our customers thinking it is all for them
Caleb : we set a limit which we see as acceptable for the shared environment

LATER...
In a chat they suggested that I change to a virtual private sector with separate resouce allocations. That would double the price and there is all the potential setup problems.

SO...
Do you think the host's limit on the number of SMTP connections is the cause of my newsletter distribution failure?

THANK YOU.

I already see improvements in the user interface that I like.

I want to resend the newsletter to those who didn't get it. Is there a way you can determine the order they were sent out in so I can Send it to a bunch at the back of the list first? That way, if something goes wong again, I won't be hitting the same recipients.

I entered my hostin information now for your reference.

I downloaded the latest stable version of ListMail to my PC and unzipped it but I don't know what to do now. I found "Install and Upgrade.txt" and in it I found:
[ Upgrading ]

1. Overwrite your old files with the new ones.  (Do not overwrite the CGI scripts or config.php unless specified.)

2. Log in to ListMail.

The trouble is I have no idea where my old files are that are to be overwritten. As you know, somene set this up for me and I feel like I'm walking blind here.

General Help & How-To / Some of my newsletter went out, some didn't.
« on: April 30, 2006, 04:19:17 pm »
Dean,
I'm now logged in to the forum for the first time. I think this is where you want me to work through the problem with you. (Below is the problem as I described it to you earlier and your email response. )

You had advised me to upgrade to the latest release and I'll do that but I want to avoid adding more variables to the situation until it is resolved.  I've played with the demo of the current version and see some nice improvememts.

I have 2 immediate needs though.
 1. Figure out who did and who did not get my last newsletter so I can resend it to those who didn't get it.
 2. Fix what went wrong to ensure it doesn't just fail again.

You asked me to send you my server information. I'm not sure what you are needing. My site, creativelyspeaking.com is hosted on http://www.apollohosting.com.

Thanks,
Randall

YOUR PRIOR RESPONSE:
You should have received an email with your new ListMail member details.  I
recommend upgrading to v1.85 and (or) submitting your server information to me at
the following URL so I can investigate.

http://listmailpro.com/support?t=other

>From what you describe in your previous emails it sounds like your host may be
reaching the limits of its server capability for email.  Some shared hosting
companies place far too many users on each server which can affect email
performance and deliverability by quite a factor.

What I can do is enable the SMTP log to see if your messages are in fact being
accepted by the server or if they are being ignored or rejected with ListMail not
detecting that fact.  Some improvements have been made with SMTP detection
throughout ListMail's lifetime so it's definitely a good idea to update to the
latest stable version available from the member area.

MY INITIAL GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM:

Yesterday I tried to send an e-zine to 2,500 subscribers. Some got it.
Some did not get it. I don't know who did or didn't.

* Is there a log that can tell me who did  or didn't get it sent?
* How can I find out what went wrong so I can be sure it will work next
time?

This is what appeared to happen...
Emails were sent in batches of 50. The time between batches seemed to
get longer and longer (I wasn't timing them so this is an impression.
They may have been the same slow pace all along.) It was stuck on 650
for a long time, then 700, then 750, then 800. After about 45 minutes at
800 it jumped to 2100 and then quickly went to 2502 and said it was
finished.

I appreciate your help.
