General Help & How-To / Sending error: 354 Enter message, ending with "."
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:57:47 pm »
Dean,

Thanks for the quick followup. The problem was when I tried to use a "send as email" that didn't exist. When I created the account then it worked fine.

Thanks again!

Dean,

I changed my "send as email" in order to try and re-create the problem. Then I added that line and sent an email. I got the same error. No emails were sent and they just stayed stuck in the queue.

Here is the full error for reference.

Code: [Select]
Sending error. Check your mail settings.

Server said:

and the smtp logfile...

Code: [Select]

250-PIPELINING

> RCPT TO: <xxxxxx@driveninteractive.com>

> DATA
354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
> SENT DATA

For some reason when my "authorize by checking email" in config matches my "send as email" in list settings then everything works fine.

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

Development, Suggestions / Selectively SKIPPING followups based on Products?
« on: September 26, 2006, 12:37:56 pm »
Seriously dude, what else do you want? Dean clearly laid out his reasons for being unavailable for your customization. You are not his only customer. I know he appreciates suggestions but you are crossing the line into DEMANDING things which isn't fair to him or his customers. Lay off!

As I see it you don't get to demand things unless they were promised to you when you bought LMP (things like support, bug fixes, etc.). This feature clearly wasn't there when you bought LMP so treat it as it is... a feature request. You are at DW's mercy for getting it implemented unless he accepts a payment from you to get it done.

Bug fixes, demand away. Feature requests, take it easy man! Sure, we'd all like to see our requests make it into a major release yesterday, but feature requests should be prioritized after bug fixes and support.

I've seen you proclaim over and over again "how hard can it be?". You clearly know nothing about software that must be deployed to hundreds of users all of whom will be using different versions of php, mysql, web hosts, etc. There is a long process of coding, alpha testing, beta testing, and public release. I've been coding php for a long time and seemingly simple features are never as easy as they seem.

Just my 2 cents...

General Help & How-To / Sending error: 354 Enter message, ending with "."

I've been getting this (Sending error: 354 Enter message, ending with ".") error like a lot of others and I just wanted to post a solution that worked for me.

I tried everything I could think of and the problem was with a mismatch between my "authorize by checking email" login id setting under "configuration" and my "send as email" under "list settings".

So the solution (for me anyway) was to make sure my "authorize by checking email" login id was exactly the same as my "send as email" for the list I was sending to.

This does however make it very inconvenient to have a different "send as email" for each list. Dean, any possible workaround for this?

Development, Suggestions / What's next after v1.87b?
« on: September 09, 2006, 08:19:35 am »
Wow, I thought the tea break comment was in jest. Did anyone else take it that way?

Guys, I think the best way to keep this moving forward (and I'm not trying to be a salesman here in DW's forum) is to:

1. sign up for a free trial of Conversion Scout at http://www.driveninteractive.com/landing/freetrial/cs.php

2. Create some campaign links and put them into your mailings

3. Watch the tracking begin and start thinking about how you would like to see the two systems work together.

If we can nail down some very specific requirements I could probably work something out relatively quickly.

BTW... DW, feel free to delete this if it is inappropriate. I am just trying to follow up on the conversation. I can see where, even if it would take you a year to do it, you might want to reserve the right to add conversion tracking in later on your own; and going forward with Conversion Scout now might limit those possibilities for you down the road.

Cheers,
-Dan

Ok, I am starting to see more clearly. So you want to track clicks on links or buttons on your own site as an intermediate step to a conversion, to see what actions they performed (on your site) before getting to the sale?

That would be a feature we can look at and would take some time but is surely feasible.

Also, with a little imagination I think Conversion Scout can be used quite effectively as-is for tracking the effectiveness of your mailings, without direct integration per se.

The tracking power comes from your links. An example for tracking a mailing would be this:

1. Make a Campaign Link, which would look like this:
http://www.mysite.com/landing.php?u=xx&cp=50percentOff&site=Newsletter-List5&cost=100
When your subscribers click this link, they will be sent to http://www.mysite.com/landing.php and will be tracked in Conversion Scout as coming from your "Newsletter-List5" under the "50percentOff" campaign, and a cost of $100 (if you hired a copywriter or something) so you can track your ROI.

2. Put this link in your newsletter and let the tracking begin.

3. Optional: if you want, you can put this link unto LMP's own link tracking program so you can count it there first then send them to the Conversion Scout link. That way you can track both!

Anyway, the key is that these links do not need to be saved in Conversion Scout beforehand; so really no direct integration is required to use it effectively for mailings. Just create the links and put them in your newsletter; Conversion Scout does the rest when they land on your site.

With regards to split testing; if Dean can get the "send one email to half the list and another email to the other half" feature implemented, all you would need to do is make sure the Conversion Scout links in each email were different and you'd have built-in tracking with regards to which email they responded to.

One last note, there are all kinds of ways I can work with Dean to bring Conversion Scout to LMP users. Maybe offer a discount coupon he can announce in the forum/put into sales confirmation emails, private label reseller program where he can earn 50% recurring profits, and an affiliate program that pays a one time commission of 200% on the monthly price.

-Dan

P.S. Sorry if this thread is getting off topic. I was confused what the split was for and which topic went where...

Sorry Brett, I didn't have it set to notify me of replies and I just happened to check back.

I guess I would have to clarify with you what you mean by an Action as opposed to a Conversion. To me they sound synonymous. A conversion/action could be anything; submitting a contact form, subscribing to your newsletter, a sale in your shopping cart... almost anything that happens on your website can be tracked.

Yes, I'd definitely be interested and open to suggestions on how Conversion Scout could be integrated into LMP; both solid products by the way

Development, Suggestions / since we are voting

I have to say I disagree with the statement that DevEdit from Interspire is awful. I've been using their editor for years in my content management system and it is great; very feature rich and easy to use. Their support is great (I've been a customer for years) and the editor is under constant development. They recently stepped out of the shadows of "works only with Internet Explorer on Windows" and added went cross-browser and cross-platform.

Plus, paying for something good isn't a bad thing. "You get what you pay for" definitely holds true when buying software. What happens when the developers of these free editors decide to start charging or discontinue development and support? Then you are left with exactly what you paid for. NOTHING. When you pay for something, especially a product that is the core of a company's offering, you can be sure they will be around for the long term.

Anyway, I know DevEdit can be successfully integrated into LMP because I've done it. Take a look at the video I made for my customers

and my other forum post on the topic

General Help & How-To / test list

I may be using my straw brain today but I am intrigued as to how you set up a few thousand e-mail addresses with such ease.
It takes me a couple of minutes to set one up... :o

I could be wrong, but my guess is that the email addresses don't actually exist and the server is set up to discard emails to addresses that don't exist.

General Help & How-To / test list
« on: April 03, 2006, 12:42:46 pm »
Dean,

During some tech support you did for me a while ago you imported a list of test addresses such as test1@lmhost2.com, test2@lmhost2.com, etc. There are about 10,000 of these addresses and you mentioned that messages sent to these are just silently discarded by your server.

My question is, can I still use this list for testing and will your server still discard these as you described? (I don't want to hammer your server unnecessarily)

Thanks,
Dan

Development, Suggestions / "Contribution System" for new features?
« on: December 08, 2005, 07:39:32 am »
I'm not sure how the contribution system is supposed to work. Ask people if they want to support a feature, have them donate to it, and then everyone gets it when it is done? I think that would be difficult to manage and you'd have too many "chefs in the kitchen" trying to lead development.

You'll also have those who will never contribute but will gain the full advantage of the new feature without paying a dime. They'll probably also want to have their say on development even though they aren't paying. This scenario plays out in the open source community all the time. The real contributors will feel taken advantage of.

Here are my 2 cents on a couple of issues...

I'd definitely pay for extra features that I need or want. I'd like to see a sort of plug-in or module system. i.e. buy base ListMail then buy the plugins for features you need or want. It would have to be very easy to add/remove plugins from your installation.

Forum support should remain free for everyone. This way we can help each other out. Dean would need to withdraw from helping with certain issues in the forum and force people to pay for support when the forum doesn't provide answers.

I've seen successful subscription type systems where you pay $xx per year for bug fixes and support. I think a small fee for new customers would be reasonable for the time/talent/experience needed to maintain a quality, bug-free product. (I'm not just saying that because I'm an exempt current customer. Even it I was a new customer I wouldn't complain about this because I think it is fair.)

I made a video trying to sell ListMail as an add-on to a potential client's website. It shows my implementation of DevEdit (listed above) into ListMail.

Have a look.

Development, Suggestions / clean up lm_sent table
« on: July 06, 2005, 09:54:08 am »
Dean,

Thanks for considering the archiving feature. A few suggestions for the administration of this feature:

1. Specify if specific messages are viewable or not viewable in the archives

2. Specify categories of messages in the archives; i.e. Press Releases, Company News, Special Announcements, etc.

3. The category names can be specified in a list configuration option

4. Entire categories can be marked as viewable or not viewable in the archives

5. Public and private archive search functions

Hope my explanation is clear. Let me know your thoughts...

Thanks,
Dan

Help!

Both Names are in the "First Name" box and the last name is not capitalized! How can I get the last name capitalized?

Thx

This is happening because the subscriber entered their first and last name in the "first name" box of your subscription form and didn't capitalize their last name in the "last name" box of your form. You will need to edit this person's details in order for everything to print correctly.

Do a search for this person's email address and change their details.
