Development, Suggestions / Feature Request: Inboxresponse.com?
« on: February 16, 2007, 08:43:37 am »
HI Dean,

BounceRemoval.com is now InboxResponse.com.

InboxResponse.com offers remote tracking and notification of successful, delayed, and failed ("bounced") email delivery attempts and ensure that your mailing lists are free of undeliverable email addresses. Our systems automatically receive, parse, sort, notify you, and when using an InboxResponse.com enabled mailing list program, can even automatically remove your bounced addresses from your mailing lists!

Currently, their only "enabled mailing list program" is site interactive and smpro http://www.siteinteractive.com/subpro/

What do you think about something like this for LMPRO integration?

Email Web Hosting / Decided to stay
« on: February 16, 2007, 08:40:49 am »
Hi Dean,

I decided to stay where I'm at and pay you to update it and get teh bounce.cgi working

My host said that they believe these changes can be done, but making custom changes to the configurations on the VPS is beyond the scope of what their  technical support is intended to cover.

How would you suggest we get started on that?

Email Web Hosting / HostGator
« on: January 31, 2007, 07:15:14 am »
Hi Dean

Thanks for the information!  I will check into those as well.

Over the past few days, I went over to hostgator and bought one of their plans to test it.

It came with CPanel and allowed email aliasing, etc.

I setup the email alias to go to bounce.cgi.  But I couldn't get it to work... for some reason, it kept doing this:

/home/path/to/server/public_html/cgi-bin/bounce.cgi@mysitename.com

it kept adding @mysitename.com to the end of line in the forwarding section of cpanel.

I tried using "quotes" I tried using 'single quotes' etc.

I could never get the bounce.cgi to work.

The other kicker for me was the fact that I was having major issues getting all my databases to talk to each other and the phpmyadmin interface wasn't giving me "root" access for some reason.

Plus, their tech support was *AWfUL*... they were clueless on the aliasing questions I was asking them.

And THEN I decided to actually look at the terms of service (ooops!)  they have a 5,000 a day email limit (or soemthing that was way to low).

I ended up pulling the plug on them after spending about 1 day working on the server.

I wanted to see if I could get bounce.cgi working and I wanted to see how hard it was to get the new databases working (that was my #1 goal of this test)...

But, lesson learned.... read the TOS first if you send out a lot of email (duh)  :oops:

Also, I then read the post earlier in this thread about having the bounce mailbox check more than 1 time  a day... I will try that now before moving.

I really, really like where I'm at... the guys are great in tech support.

I'm currently at Advantagecom NEtworks  http://www.simplywebhosting.com/

I highly recommend them.

Also, this just in......

I pushed back to them a little on the script aliasing and I told them that Dean said there has to be a way

 :D

Here's what they said:

We believe these changes can be done, but making custom changes to the configurations on his VPS is beyond the scope of what technical support is intended to cover.  You are welcome to make those changes yourself, or you can have us look into making these changes (including research) at our $75.00 per hour rate. Our estimate is that this task would take one hour.

If you are interested in us handling this issue for you, we would also need you to provide more information about this issue, including what is it that you do to send your mailing list, and the time you last sent your mailing list.

So what do you think?

Thanks!

Email Web Hosting / Bounce Mailbox Via Cron
« on: January 29, 2007, 01:04:09 pm »
HI Mike

Can you give me the cron information to setup a cron job to check the bounce mailbox every few hours?

That would be more ideal than changing hosts to get bounce.cgi working (and then not having the desired outcome).

I know you're not running daily mail that frequently.

I searched the forum but couldn't find what that would look like.

Thanks for the help!

Email Web Hosting / Web Host?
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:09:14 am »
HI

Unfortunately, I've been having a fit trying to find a host that will allow me to run the "bounce.cgi" feature of ListMailPro.  In other words, the host where I've got a huge site, ListMailPro, Amember, PhpBB, and Kayako Help Desk fully integrated and talking to each other doesn't have "email aliasing to a script" turned on.

I'm running a Virtual Private Server.  I've been with these guys forever and moving everything is a REAL pain.

Anyway, I wanted to start another thread on what I've seen, learned, about hosting companies in regards to large email lists.  There are probably better people to talk about this than I, so I welcome any input!

I found out via this forum that DreamHost used to be good, but they really had issues in the summer of 2006 and they'll nail you for being a resource hog.

I also signed up with ThirdSphere hosting, and I would stick with them, but they're only good for "product downloads" as opposed to a "membership area", plus you have to buy a totally separate account for each domain.  I run a membership site with chapters all over the world, so it's not going to work for me -- no membership area to collaborate in, and it's too expensive.

However, If I were running a solo site, with product downloads, I'd use thirdsphere because I've got a patchwork of autoresponders, shopping carts, etc, all accomplishing the same thing and it's been a lot more expensive and time consuming to do that on my own.  The biggest downside is relying aon everyone else to make sure they don't upload spamming lists, etc.  ALL users of the "automation station" send out through the same IP address I believe.  So, I'm willing to bet some moron is going to get the whole thing blacklisted one day.  I just wasn't willing to put myself through constant switching of hosts. I want my own IP Addresss es for everything.  But, if you're running a 2 page website selling ebooks, go for it. Make sure you click on the signature in Dean's sig block so he can make some affiliate commission :)

Anyway, for me, I need to stick to a Virtual Private Server or Dedicated Server.

1to1 is sold out of them at the time of this post.

also, for some reason, host4profit scares me.  I feel like I'm buying an ebook from them or something.   They've been around awhile and there is good press and bad press on them.  i know they have really high commissions, but that's not going to help me get back the hundreds of  hours of trying to move hosts. I've already spent 2 full days backing up SQL databases, etc.  :shock:   So, if they start messing with me and I have a hard time with them , it won't be good.

The goal for me is to find a host with the most flexibility and who aren't constantly being watched by the ISPs for spammng (a lot of the companies out there only send email through 1 or 2 IP addresses -- that's a huge problem -- actually, thirdsphere is like that with their "automation station".

Right now I think JaguarPC.com looks to be the best.

I've spent about 3 weeks looking around, and if you like LMPro and have large lists, Jaguar PC might be the best thing going (what do you think?)

    *  Full root access
    * Equal share cpu
    * Dualcore Dual cpu servers
    * Fast RAID10 Storage
    * Host Unlimited domains
    * FREE Level 2 Managed services
    * FREE Server hardening and security
    * FREE daily backups
    * FREE Moving assitance and data transfer for moves
    * FREE Virtuozzo Power Panel
    * FREE Enom reseller account
    * FREE 3 IP Addresses
    * Choice of OS: CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, Suse
    * Choice of Control Panel: cPanel, Interworx, DirectAdmin, Plesk

I'm paying over 120.00/month for a host that does this the equivalent to Jaguar PC (been there 4 years, so I get in early on the VPS hosting action)

Jaguar PC Apollo Plan

    * 25 GB Disk Space
    * 3mbps unmetered or 500 GB Bandwidth
    * 384 MB Guaranteed Ram
    * 1536 MB Burstable Ram
    * Equal share cpu

At Jaguar PC, it's only 59.95/month

I would pick the cpanel control panel so I could setup bounce.cgi and an email alias.

If I was trying to figure out what to do, I'd do this --- it's very scalable, it's built to handle large lists, it's got root access, etc.

I tried to find their Terms of service, but all the links were broken to it :(

Anyway, before I spend  a *ton* of time moving hosts, I'm really going to come out swinging with my current host to figure out the email alias to bounce.cgi thing.   If that doesn't work out , I'll probably switch.

What do you all think?  Any work arounds on the bounce.cgi ?  any thoughts on jaguarpc?

Thanks,

Yes, I currently use user selection.  I had 35 lists in user selection combining into 1 master list.  I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this was:
1) slowing down the mailing
2) making it more difficult to remove people when they wanted to be removed (I have had problems with multiple removals off of lists by both clicking the links and the forms)

I also have a problem when I pull out the list....I end up with a lot more duplicates than I would like. though, this was the reason for my posting, I am now thinking I won't do this that often.  We just launched a new service, and I had to pull evertyhing out to move them to another program.  I saw some instances where I had 9 or 10 emails on the list.  I had to buy a "de duping" program to get it straightened out.

I re-engineered the process to get teh 35 lists in user selection down to 15.    I also saw in the new upgrade about the new "multiple remove" processing in forms.  I am going to test that out.

Thanks!

I've had LMPro for 3 months and it's working flawlessly!  It's kind of scary actually....I keep logging in to make sure it's supposed to and it IS doing what it's supposed to :)

I have LMPro integrated with Amember.  When a person joins as a member, they get added to the correct list in LMPRo.  Most of the lists have an autoresponder series set up and LMPRo detects these and kicks them off via daily mail with no problem.

My question is....

When all these members join their respective memberships (and hence their respective LMPro lists),  I would like to add them to a "master" newsletter now.  I have it set up as list 35 in LMPRo and when they subscribe via the subscription form, I DO HAVE the "When users are added to this list also add them to the following list(s):"  checked with 35 in the box and that works like a champ....

How can I have the inserted people (inserted via amember in real time) get added to list 35?  Selected this from inside amember isn't an option...I  cannot make them get inserted into list 35...they have to stay inserted into their respective membership lists.  However, daily mail appears to not be "smart" enough to know an email was directly inserted into a list (i.e, list 7) and copy it into list 35.

If I cannot make them all go into 35 some how, I am going to have to send my master email out by querying all 35 lists and sending out that way (which I think LMPro can handle, but I'm nervous having that many duplicates running around)

Thanks!!

Server Optimization, Tweaks / Sending out emails : SPF Framework

Dean,

How do I do that?

You may have success with the SMTP hostname they recommend instead of "localhost" as I believe you had it before.

How do I set the hostname to upsa-intl.org when LMPRo connects to send out?

Server Optimization, Tweaks / The Answer!
« on: April 21, 2006, 11:10:19 am »
here's what they're saying at my webhost.

I would venture to guess that this is going to effect not just me, but anyone with SPF set up :(

But, this stuff's over my head!  I just hope you can fix it

They said ----------------------------------------------------

EHLO localhost isn't the problem. The problem comes before that.

You can see in my tests that I telnet'ed to port 25 at various hostnames and only got the "may be forged" tag when *connecting to* certain host names.

From your description, this script appears to connect to sendmail through the tcp/ip stack rather than calling it as a program like most scripts. Sendmail can be accessed as a mail sending system two ways: 1) through port 25 using tcp/ip or 2) by calling the sendmail program locally using its binary executable (/usr/sbin/sendmail, for instance).

Accessing sendmail through port 25 is best reserved for server to server communications. The binary executable is the best method when using a script within the same machine as sendmail.

That being said, the script is connecting to the wrong hostname, which is why it gets the "may be forged" tag. Change the hostname that the script connects to to upsa-intl.org rather than whatever it is configured to use right now.

Customization, Integration / Integrate with Joomla?
« on: April 21, 2006, 09:45:13 am »
Moodle is a "component" that can be added to "joomla"

Joomla is an open source platform that is available for free.  It comes with content management etc "out of the box."

People then create components.  These components do all kinds of stuff.  It's like if you have a palm pilot and people write palm pilot apps.  Palm Pilot = Joomla (the platform).  The custom apps = in this case "Moodle"

So, the goal is to find something to integrate with Joomla first (amember does this) and then your component second (which may or may not work).

For example, I know for a fact that the current version of Joomla 1.0 works with amember.  Don't know about the add-on of Moodle.

Here's what I do know

Joomla USED TO be called Mambo. But the dude that made Mambo didn't want to give up the name, but he gave up the software because it's open source -- go figure.  Anyway, the "community" vacated the Mambo premises and renamed it to Joomla and put it on steroids.  1.0 has been out for awhile and MOST Mambo components work with it

However!!

1.5 is coming out soon, which is going to trash a ton of components.  Remember, it's all open source.  So people are working on these components in the basement until their spouse gets annoyed and leaves them because they are drinking too many mountain dews staying up all night for no money... so a lot of components/add ons won't work on 1.5.

If moodle is "a paid" component, you're probably ok -- they want to keep making $$..

I'm sure the guys at amember will be fine because 1)they're awesome and 2) they are fast and 3) a ton of people integrate amember to joomla

The only thing that I KNOW doesn't work from amember-Joomla is COMMUNITY BUILDER.  don't use it (it's an addon).  It kills amember-joomla integration.

Some slang for Joomla is J!  and J!2CB  (like Joomla to Community Builder)... you know?

Hre's a ton of info on J! here (just remember, whenever you see "Mambo" it's J! version 1.0.  When they come out with J! 1.5, 95% of mambo stuff probably won't work.  This is on the amember site.  Do a search in their forum too.

Here's a tip:  Move to J! with Moodle, get it working and sit for awhile!!

http://amember.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4217

And
http://www.amember.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3696

Oh and by the way....

When the amember guys say the "don't have single sign on" it usually means the true meaning... sign on one time (in amember) and cruise all applications (never loggin in to any of them).

For example, I have amember that "hooks" into LMPro, Joomla, a Job Board (custom) for 40.00, help desk software, and PHPBB forum.

All of these all use the SAME SINGLE username and p-word from amember   (the layman's "single sign on") but they don't all use the "same cookie" which would let you in essence log in to all of them at once.  What that means is, I log in to all of them individually with the same username and p-word (which is cool).  Yes, when you change something in amember, it DOES go to the other databases.  Highly, Highly recommend it.

LMPRo to Amember is the coolest thing since sliced bread IMHO

 :D

Don't know if you ever got a reply to this, but you can use Amember (amember.com) to integrate into Joomla and also ListMail Pro.  You can set it up to take "free memberships" when they fill out that form, they get access to your stuff and they are added to both Joomla and ListMailPro.

Server Optimization, Tweaks / RCPT Response

This is teh RCPT response I get too.

As more and more people role out their SPF frameworks, I'm really taking a hit.  I wonder if anyone else is seeing this?   Over 1/2 my emails aren't going through.

LM: Undeliverable. RCPT response: 550 5.7.1 <someone@emailaddress.org>... Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged [66.29.144.103]
. Skipping.

I will let you know what my webhost comes back with.  I hope we can resolve it -- thanks for looking into new "ehlo local host" coding

Do you see anything that it might be from my webhost's comments -- I'm kind of clueless!

« on: April 20, 2006, 07:07:05 pm »
HERE'S WHAT MY WEBHOST TECH SUPPORT SAID.   I WILL POST THE RESOLUTION WHEN I GET TO IT... SOME OF THIS IS OVER MY HEAD :)
--------------------------------------------

 Usually, the "may be forged" tag comes from mismatched forward and reverse DNS. I checked this and at an initial glance, it appears to be fine.

I did notice that you were using localhost in the EHLO and sometimes that can cause interesting results due to IP addressing and DNS for "localhost".

From within your VPS, I was able to reproduce the problem:

Notice that the "may be forged" tag only shows up when you connect to something other than the default hostname. So, when you connect to powermail.upsa-intl.org or when you connect to just the IP address, the problem can be reproduced. This is because sendmail is configured to believe that it is upsa-intl.org and nothing else.

Simple solution: in the MX record for each domain pointing to the sendmail server on upsa-intl.org, be sure it points to upsa-intl.org.

Now, that is only for incoming mail, but you claim to be having trouble with outbound mail. I think the "may be forged" tag you see when connecting to your own mail server is a "red herring" to the problem you're trying to solve.

To solve the problem with outgoing mail, I need to know the following things:

1. What is the IP address of the system running the mail client. For instance, if it is webmail running on your VPS, it would be the default IP address of your VPS. If it is Outlook Express or equivalent running on your PC, it would be the public IP address your Internet access provider assigned to your network or PC.

2. What machine are you connecting to when sending the outgoing mail? If webmail, it would be your VPS. If a mail client on your PC, this would be the outgoing mail server you have configured in your mail client.

3. What is the "from address" used in the email you're sending?

Depending on the answers to those questions, I may need additional information.

I did find one other issue:

CODE
bash-2.05b# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1  upsa-intl.org upsa-intl localhost localhost.localdomain
bash-2.05b# cat /etc/host.conf
order hosts,bind

This is the root of why sendmail within your VPS believes upsa-intl.org should be 127.0.0.1 and thus, when you connect to the sendmail server from within the VPS, it doesn't properly match forward and reverse DNS.

That being said, I can't think of a real world scenario in which that causes a problem. Very few people have reason to log into a VPS and connect to sendmail from within the VPS using anything other than the default hostname.

I'll still need the answers to the other questions to solve your outgoing mail issue.

----------------- MY RESPONSE BACK TO THEM WAS --------------------------
Quote

My "default domain" is upsa-intl.org  it's IP address is: 66.29.144.103  this is the same for all sub-domains including powermail.upsa-intl.org (66.29.144.103).  I'm not running a local system.

2. What machine are you connecting to when sending the outgoing mail? If webmail, it would be your VPS. If a mail client on your PC, this would be the outgoing mail server you have configured in your mail client.
 It's an email script via php.  It sends out autoresponses to people that subscribe and opt-in to a list.  It sends it at a predetermined time via a cron job (i.e, 30 days after subscribing etc).   I also use this LAMP type program to send outbound emails to lists for newsletters on a "push" basis whenever i need to.   I talked to their tech support and primary coding guru.  He said:
Quote
that the error seems to be in response to their  greeting "EHLO localhost". This is hard-coded into the script but they wouldn't mind changing it if they knew another value worked better or was more standard-compliant. They are scanning the SMTP RFCs again to find out more.
Andy do you have any suggestions on what they should use for a value?  Do you think this is the problem?

3. What is the "from address" used in the email you're sending?

from is "do_not_reply@powermail.upsa-intl.org" currently.  But I have had it as several others before and it it didn't have an impact.

Do you see anything that it might be  -- I'm kind of clueless  :cry:

Well, I changed the bounced email address to do_not_reply@upsa-intl.org  That now matches the "sender" header in the email

Someone told me that if you don't do this (match the "sender" and the "bounced/from" ) that it might get caught on the application side [like MS Outlook] and put into a "junk" folder.  So that's good,

however,

I'm still getting the "may be forged" thing even when the "from" and "sender"  matched  :cry:

Hi Dean

I've been working hard trying to get my emails to go through.  My servers didn't have an SPF record on them, but I added an SPF record.  That allowed me to get through a lot of ISPs but there is still one thing that's happening, I hope you can help.

See where it says in the first line "may be forged"?    On some email's this is not a problem (like this first example,), but there is a lot where it IS A problem (see below):

Even though the email goes through (for this 1 email), when I send out to 10,000 people I'm getting a lot that say: "

Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged [66.29.144.103]  It looks like this:

> MAIL FROM: <bounced@upsa-intl.org>
> RCPT TO: <someone@leros.net>
250 2.1.0 <bounced@upsa-intl.org>... Sender ok
550 5.7.1 <someone@leros.net>... Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged [66.29.144.103]
LM: Undeliverable. RCPT response: 550 5.7.1 <someone@leros.net>... Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged

I have updated my SPF record to include 66.29.144.103 as an "approved" sender of email.  I don't know why it's saying that "it's possibly forged" do you?  Is it because the "from" address is different then the bounced address?
